After a short while we reach the foothills of the biggest inland water of the Caribbean, called Lago Enriquillo, where the frontier village Jimani is situated. After crossing the border, we have only some kilometres left until the capital of Haiti called Port au Prince. We take a busy street up the hills to the villa and hotel center called PETIONVILLE. Up here the air is fresh and the gardens are tropical. Here we are far away from the banality of the business quarter of Port of Prince. Here we will know the drastic differences of the world which is on the third place concerning poverty. In the luxury hotel EL RANCHO we relax and take a refreshment before we start into the OTHER WORLD. We didn´t come to take a bath, but to know the exotics, because here we are on the most exotic island of the Caribbean. And we came for shopping. We visit the famous MARCHE DE FER. It´s not an iron markt as the name says, and only a part of this market is for household articles made of plate. In a huge hall built in 1889 people offer anything you can imagine and you cannot imagine. You find anything, starting with a petticoat, an empty cosmetic can, reused rims, even the spaghettis which are sold one by one, tropical fruit, bizarre roots and the old issues of PLAYBOY, just anything which could be sold. The old center of town, which was built like a chess-board, was destroyed several times in the 18th and 19th century by earthquake and great fires. The wooden houses in colonial style in some parts of the town are the villas richly decorated in gingerbread-style. A wood-carver shows you the arts and crafts and a mahagony markt offers you all the possible souvenirs, because Haiti is the only country in the Caribbean with the hand of a creator. The WHITE HOUSE with the domes, the government place, was built after the model of the CAPITOL in Washington and the PETIT PALAIS in Paris. In the end of the day we visit the cathedral SANTA TRINITE. The paintings of this cathedral are the most known example of primitive art. They represent the biblical story and were made by the most famous Haitian painters of this artistic school. In the same cathedral you find a precious organ which was built by a German organ-builder.

The next day we go to the peak BOUTIELLE and enjoy the view over Port au Prince until the Dominican Republic. Another ride through PETIONVILLE shows you the big differences of the country once again. Here you have a chance to buy the world famous rhum Bourboncurt or liquors of different kinds of tastes. After crossing the border, we go to a typical village in the South West of the Dominican Republic. In one of the most beautiful places, you enjoy the national kitchen. On the trip we stop several times in order to take pictures of the Lago Enriquillo or of a place of discovery of the rock drawings of the last Taino - indians. Here the legendary cacique Enriquillo had his favourite place.
